Accutane is a form of vitamin A that is used to treat severe nodular acne. The Generic name of Accutane is Isotretinoin.

Approved in 1982 Accutane treats severe nodular acne by reducing the amount of oils released by the oil glands in patient’s skin. This medication is usually only given when other medications or antibiotics have already been tried and have failed.

Only available under a special program called iPLEDGE, Accutane is not to ever be used in pregnant women as it can cause severe, life threatening birth defects. Women who can potentially bear a child are required to agree in writing to use two specific forms of birth control and also to have regular pregnancy test throughout the taking of Accutane. Even just one dose of Accutane can cause serious birth defects.

Some side effect of Accutane include depressed mood, trouble concentrating, insomnia, aggression and agitation, crying spells, change in behavior, suicide thoughts, numbness, blurred vision, severe headaches, hearing problems, sezures, severe pain in the upper stomach, loss of appetite, severe diarrhea, fever, chils, body aches, flu symptoms, joint pain, and easy bruising or bleeding.

Accutane has been pulled in the United States. The last day for distribution in the U.S. was June 25th. The drug will also be pulled in 11 other countries. The decision for Accutane to be pulled was made for economic rather than safety reasons.
